Today the Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) is showing its support for World Autism Awareness Week by raising money for The National Autistic Society (NAS).

NAS provides information, support, schooling and services for people with autism. Colleagues within the TDS team have experienced first-hand the support that NAS offers and TDS will be raising money to show our appreciation for the service they provide.

TDS colleagues will be having a ‘pink and purple dress down day’ which are the colours of NAS as well as selling NAS merchandise, having a sweepstake, a pink and purple cake sale and offering a virtual reality experience to help colleagues understand the daily challenges that may be faced by someone with Autism.

Many people have heard of autism or Asperger Syndrome but do not appreciate the day-to-day pressures on families and the life-changing support that organisations like NAS provide.

Autism is a life-long developmental disability that affects how people perceive the world and interact with others.

Autism, including Asperger syndrome, is more common than most people think. There are around 700,000 people living with Autism in the UK – that’s more than 1% of the population. Autism affects all nationalities and cultural backgrounds; however it appears to affect more men than women.

People with Autism often have difficulty interpreting both verbal and non-verbal communication with many having a very literal understanding of language and therefore believing people mean exactly what they say. It is common for people with autism to have sensory sensitivity which can cause anxiety and even physical pain.

There is no ‘cure’ for autism or Asperger Syndrome, however, there are a range of strategies and approaches which can help improve the quality of lives.

Please join us in helping to raise money for this life-changing charity and donate at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tdsforautism
